|The email below is from Dillon Holmes, the president of a solar power installation company. Dillon started a petition on CREDO Mobilize.|
As the president of a solar power installation company, I know how important it is to have federal regulators in place who understand the issues and support clean energy. Ron Binz, whom President Obama recently nominated to lead the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, is a well-qualified public servant. If confirmed by the Senate, Binz would be good for clean energy and good for the United States.
But conservative groups, led by the Koch brothers, are spearheading a massive effort to block Binz’s nomination — and the vote is expected to be very close. That’s why I started my own campaign on CREDOMobilize.com, which allows activists to start their own petitions. My petition, which is to Senator Portman and the other senators on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, asks the following:
President Obama recently nominated Ron Binz as chair of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, an important but often overlooked federal agency which is responsible for interstate and wholesale electricity, natural gas pipelines, transmission, and hydropower. Binz is a well-qualified energy expert with a long track record of supporting clean sources of energy that can power our economy without fueling climate change and making people sick.
But on Monday morning, more than a dozen conservative groups, led by the Koch brothers, sent a letter to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee in an attempt to smear Binz’s reputation and block his confirmation as the next chair of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
The committee is expected to vote on Binz’s confirmation very soon, and Senator Portman could cast the deciding vote, so we need to act fast to counteract the Koch brothers’ attack.
Clean energy is incredibly popular in the United States. Three in four Americans want the United States to pursue more solar energy, according to Gallup, and another 71% favor further development of wind power. But if Senator Portman goes along with the Koch brothers’ plan and blocks Binz from becoming chair of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, it would inject partisan politics into the federal rulemaking process and put our progress at risk.
Binz’s confirmation process is moving forward quickly, so we need to push back now to make sure Senator Portman knows that his constituents support President Obama’s selection of Ron Binz as the next chair of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
