Attorney General Mike DeWine should recuse himself from the prosecution of a man accused of using a fraudulent charity to make political contributions.
The man, named John Donald Cody, collected more than $100 million in donations for the U.S. Navy Veterans Association.
Cody donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to more than fifty mostly Republican candidates, including a $1,000 contribution to DeWine’s 2006 Senate campaign, according to the Associated Press. Other Ohio recipients included U.S. House Speaker John Boehner, most of the state’s Republican congressional delegation, and former state attorneys general Jim Petro and Betty Montgomery.
David Pepper, a Cincinnati Democrat looking to unseat DeWine next year, said that because of the attorney general’s ties to Cody, he should turn over the case to others, such as another state’s attorney general or federal or county prosecutors. Such a move, he said, is “Ethics 101.”
