Less than a month after signing a budget that raises taxes for Ohio’s poorest 20% while cutting taxes for the wealthiest, Governor John Kasich gave a speech in Williamsburg Township demanding more tax cuts for the wealthy.

Ohio’s new budget cuts taxes across the board by 10% but includes a sales tax hike that will disproportionately affect the poor. Gov. Kasich not only expects the poor to swallow this tax shift but is publicly demanding to further slash taxes for the wealthiest Ohioans, stating, “We have momentum.”

There’s no reason to believe that more tax cuts for the wealthy will help Ohio’s working class, especially given Gov. Kasich’s history of balancing these cuts on the backs of the poor. Gov. Kasich believes he has the momentum to keep giving tax breaks to the wealthy while increasing taxes on the working class. We have to show him otherwise.

To help build pressure against the governor’s effort, Will Klatt of Columbus started a campaign on CREDO’s new site. The petition, which is to Gov. Kasich, asks the following:

Ohio’s working class can’t afford to pay for more tax breaks for the rich. Stop working to give more tax breaks to the wealthy and to unfairly shift the tax burden onto the backs of working class Ohioans.

If enough people sign the petition, we can show Gov. Kasich that he will face significant opposition if he tries to push an even more regressive tax plan for Ohio.
