Berea Municipal Court might have to refund hundreds of thousands of dollars to people who paid local court costs for traffic and criminal charges that were dismissed.
Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Dick Ambrose ruled this week that charging court costs for dismissed cases violates state law. Attorneys may go ahead with a class-action lawsuit against Berea Municipal Court for cases dating back to 1995.
It’s unclear how many people might be eligible for refunds or what the amount might be.
An attorney for the municipal court and the clerk of courts said Wednesday the ruling would likely be appealed.
