Franklin County Common Pleas judge Pat Sheeran cleared the sale of five Ohio prisons yesterday by denying a request by ProgressOhio to block the deal on constitutional grounds. Judge Sheeran also set a September 13 hearing to consider ProgressOhio’s request for an injunction based on the argument that the public was denied a chance to vote on prison privatization.
ProgressOhio went to court challenging Governor John Kasich‘s sale of the facilities as being “unconstitutional and unenforceable.”
The Ohio Civil Service Employees Association pushed back against the prison sale, complaining that current state employees will be paid much less if, as expected, they get jobs in privatized facilities.
