Ohio is on track to break a record for the number of prisoners executed in a calendar year.
Tuesday, borderline mentally disabled inmate Clarence Carter was executed at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. He was the second inmate nationally killed using only the sedative pentobarbital.
Carter was the third Ohio inmate executed this year. Monthly executions are scheduled through October.
Last year, 8 inmates were executed. Last year’s number was the highest on record since Ohio resumed killing its citizens in 1999.
As many citizens gathered outside the prison to protest the execution as to watch the execution.
In 2007, Carter’s parole board had split their vote on whether to grant clemency. Those who believed clemency should be granted said they were troubled by contradictory or inaccurate testimony against Carter at his trial.
Carter was the 44th inmate executed since 1999.
